Can we colonize Antarctica?

There are seven continents and humans have colonized 6 of them. The only one they haven’t is Antarctica. Humans didn’t venture into this country much because it has an inhospitable environment for humans unlike other animals which are more adapted for the cold climate. This leads to Antarctica being the continent we have the least knowledge about.

What is Antarctica?

Antarctica is a continent that is about 5.5 million square miles (14.2 million sq kilometers). It is similar to the other continents by having land, water, oxygen, and life, and is different to the others by being the only one that has no permanent human occupation. Antarctica also has ninety percent of the world’s ice because the continent is cold with temperatures that reach -71 degrees Fahrenheit making life difficult.

What do we need to colonize Antarctica?

Despite Antarctica’s cold climate, to live there we will have to survive the weather. There will be agricultural challenges. Antarctica is not connected to global supplies chains. There are no roads or railways to provide equipment, supplies, or food. In order to survive these obstacles, we will need a store of warm clothing, heating equipment, as well as nutrients and medical supplies. You will need a greenhouse to grow plants and a way back home.

Can we colonize Antarctica?

There are different opinions about this topic. Some people say Antarctica is inhabitable because of the harsh environment and lack of supplies mentioned above. But what I think, with careful planning you can probably survive. You could make a camp that is capable enough to endure the weather with insulation and heating devices. Critical to survival would be to have a cooperative team that sticks together. Such a team could colonize Antarctica.

Overall Antarctica might be a continent where a new civilization will be born. Soon it might just be a regular continent filled with countries.
